Folsom, Vista,, Oak Ridge, Cordova all begin 2024 league play next Friday

FOLSOM- 2024 prep-football season entered its final week of pre-season play beneath the Friday night lights as area teams got their final test before heading into CIF Sac Joaquin Section Conference competition next week While a handful of area teams had the night off with their scheduled bye and an opportunity to rest up for the start of league play, both of Folsom’s team were hard at it back on the gridiron Friday night.

After having their break last week, the Folsom Bulldogs returned to Prairie City Stadium Friday in the pre-season battle of the Bulldogs, facing the Turlock Bulldogs. 

As forecast, Folsom dominated Friday’s match up. The boys of the blue ended the night with a 56-14 win over Turlock.

Folsom first got on the board with eight minutes remaining in the first quarter. Following a first down on Turlock’s five yard line, Carter Jackson completed a six yard rushing touchdown that was followed with a successful conversion to bring the game to 7-0 where it would stand at the end of the quarter.

With ten minutes to go in the second quarter Folsom brought the game to 14-0 after Folsom quarterback Ryder Lyons completed an 18 yard pass to Jameson Powell for the touchdown followed by the conversion. At the six minute mark, a first down on Turlock’s 9-yard-line poised Folsom to set up its second to last trip to the end zone in the first half that came courtesy of Daymion Rivera who completed the one-yard rushing touchdown. With just a minute remaining in the half, Folsom got the first down on Turlock’s five yard line which set up a final five yard rushing touchdown by Lyons followed by the conversion to put the score at 28-0.

Turlock emerged just before the break. After the kick off with less than a minute remaining, Turlock completed a 60 yard passing touchdown to get on the board and bring the score to 28-7 at the break.

With ten left in the third, Lyons made a long pass to Jameson Powell to put then ball on Turlock’s 18-yard line. Two minutes later it was Lyon’s 15-yard pass to Powell that brought Folsom to a 28-point lead.  With six minutes left a blocked punt followed by an 18-yard run by Jacob Bambino and the extra point gave Folsom a 35 point advantage. Two to go and it was Lyons with another pass, this time at 19 yards to Carter Jackson for the touchdown.

In the final quarter, Folsom’s momentum continued as Joseph Eyerman contributed a 10 yard rushing touchdown followed by the extra point which would be the final points of the night for Folsom. Turlock got their second mark on the board late with four minutes remaining when Russell Spaulding completed a 61 yard pass to Landyn Fitzgerald for the final trip to the end zone for the night.

Ending their pre-season at 2-1, Folsom will now begin league play next Friday. The Bulldogs will host Rocklin. Rocklin is 3-2 in pre-league. Friday’s game begins at 7:00 p.m.

Vista del Lago traveled to Oakdale Friday night for its final match up before kicking off Capital Valley Conference play next week.  The Eagles went into Friday’s game hoping for redemption for their tough loss to the Mustangs last November. Those hopes fell by means of a 55-21 loss.  Vista wrapped up its pre-season at 1-2 and will face Rio Americano (1-2) next Friday at home. Friday’s game at Eagles stadium will begin at 7:15 p.m.

After stomping Valley Christian of Roseville in its final pre-conference match-up of the season, Cordova had Friday night off. The Lancers will kick off conference play in its new Metropolitan League on Friday when they travel to West Park in Roseville.  The league season starter is expected to be a good one as Cordova enters the game 3-0 and West Park 4-0. 

Oak Ridge High School, who also was off Friday night after their trip to Tennessee last week, will host rival Del Oro next Friday. Oak Ridge ended pre-season last week with a loss to McCallie of Chattanooga, putting the Trojans at 0-3 in the season. Del Oro will enter the local powerhouse match up at 1-2.

Granite Bay, 3-0 on the season, was off Friday as well. The Grizzlies will host the Jesuit Marauders 2-0 next Friday.
