Residents within half mile radius of incident cleared from lengthy shelter in place
AUBURN – After a 14-hour standoff that began Saturday evening, a 35-year old man was taken into custody in Auburn Sunday morning.
According to the Placer County Sheriff’s, Roger Kenerly, surrendered to police after being barricaded inside a home on the 800 block of Marguerite Mine Road in the community of Auburn.
According to the Placer County Sheriff’s Office, after officers units arrived on the scene Saturday afternoon, Keneally reportedly began firing shots from inside the residence that it was reported he has barricaded himself in.
After arriving on scene, a multi-agency response surrounded the affected area to secure the neighborhood and requested that anyone within a half-mile radius of the home to to shelter in place.
Marguerite Mine Road was blocked at times as a SWAT team worked the scene. The Placer County Sheriff’s Office (PCSO) Crisis Negotiation Team was then called to assist.
After several hours, the PCSO Special Enforcement Team (SET) was called in to take over the perimeter. Utilizing an Unmanned Aerial System (UAS) for surveillance, SET effectively contained the area while neighboring properties were evacuated for everyone’s safety, according to a post incident report.
“Earlier this morning, our team was able to get Kenerly to surrender peacefully. We’d like to highlight the response team for demonstrating commendable professionalism and dedication throughout this challenging operation,” reads a statement from the Auburn Police Department. “ We also want to recognize all the law enforcement personnel involved in this operation. Their teamwork, expertise, and swift response ensured the safety of the community.”
The Auburn Police Department is continues to lead the investigation that is ongoing with additional information expected to be released soon.
