Sacramento County sheriff’s deputies are conducting a homicide investigation after four people, including two children have been found dead inside a Rancho Cordova home Tuesday afternoon, following a large law enforcement response earlier in the day that included reports of gunfire, threats involving possible ‘booby traps,’ by a 911 caller, prompting neighborhood evacuations and a heavy law enforcement response.

According to initial reports by deputies, the deceased include an adult man, an adult woman, and two juveniles, all of whom were found inside a residence on the 5400 block of Mill Water Circle, each suffering from gunshot wounds. All four were pronounced dead at the scene. The victims’ names and ages have not been released.

The incident began Tuesday morning when deputies were dispatched to reports of gunshots in a neighborhood near Copper Sunset Way in Rancho Cordova. According to the sheriff’s office, an initial caller reported hearing gunfire in the area.

Shortly afterward, dispatchers received a second phone call from a person who claimed responsibility for firing a weapon and told authorities he was actively setting up booby traps. Based on the nature of that call and the potential threat it posed, deputies initiated a large-scale response.

Multiple units from the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office responded to the area, including SWAT team members and specialized equipment. The reports prompted an active standoff and led to the evacuation of nearby homes as a precaution, while authorities worked to secure the scene and ensure public safety. Residents were urged to avoid the area due to heavy law enforcement activity.

As deputies continued their response and conducted a systematic search of the residence and surrounding neighborhood, investigators later discovered four deceased individuals inside the home on Mill Water Circle. Authorities said a thorough search did not locate any’ booby traps,’ as the caller described.

Sheriff’s officials noted that they are not looking for any suspects at this time and that there is no ongoing threat to the public. Investigators said it was not immediately known whether the deceased adult male was the individual who made the earlier phone calls claiming responsibility for the shooting.

Deputies confirmed that several firearms were registered to the man who lived at the residence, along with records indicating prior military service. Authorities also said there was no known history of domestic violence calls or prior law enforcement responses associated with the home.

Homicide detectives remain on scene, and the investigation remains active. Officials said additional information will be released as it becomes available.
