Major incident draws second alarm, response by 5 agencies

FOLSOM — A late-night fire near the Willow Creek Estates community in the city of Folsom drew a massive multi-agency response Sunday after fast-moving flames spread between two homes on Rebecca Way, leaving both structures destroyed and uninhabitable.

The fire was reported shortly after 10 p.m. in the 100 block of Rebecca Way, near Willow Creek Drive. The first arriving fire engine reported a single-story home fully involved in flames. The size of the fire had grown rapidly due to a heavy fuel load and had already begun to spread to an adjacent home.

Firefighters from the Folsom Fire Department, Sacramento Metropolitan Fire District, South Placer Fire District, Folsom Prison Fire Department and El Dorado Hills Fire Department all responded. Nearly 60 firefighters staffed 22 apparatus, including 10 engines, four truck companies, four medic units and four command units. Assistant Chief Matthew McGee served as incident commander.

Crews deployed hose lines and master streams to both homes while a quick search confirmed that all occupants and pets had reportedly escaped safely. A second alarm was requested to bring in additional resources as firefighters worked to stop the flames from advancing further into the neighborhood.

“After about 50 minutes of suppression efforts, the fire was contained to the two homes. Both residences were left destroyed, forcing the families from their houses,” reported McGee. “One resident was transported to a hospital with traumatic injuries, another was treated on scene for minor burn injuries.”

Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) members also responded, assisting firefighters and displaced residents with rehabilitation and support as the incident stretched into the early morning hours. No firefighter injuries were reported.”

Fire officials said the blaze is believed to have originated on the exterior of one of the homes while occupants were inside, though the specific cause remains under investigation. The Folsom Fire Department reminded residents to ensure their homes are equipped with working smoke detectors and that families have an escape plan in place.

This marked the second structure fire response in as many days within Folsom. On Saturday morning, firefighters contained a structure fire on Traylen Court mostly to the garage of a single-family home. See the Folsom Times related story on the Saturday fire here.
