It’s bannered to be a “dark and delicious” story that is coming to Sutter Street Theatre this Saturday afternoon. Heathers The Musical, the High School edition is set to bring some thrills along with some laughs to the stage in the heart of Historic Folsom.
This PG-13 high school edition of Heathers, The Musical follows the story of Veronica Sawyer. According the Sutter Street Theatre playbill, Veronica is described as a brainy, beautiful teenage misfit who hustles her way into the most powerful and ruthless clique at Westerberg High: the Heathers.
Many will recall the original 1988 big screen movie the musical is based after that starred some of Hollywood’s rising stars at the time, including Winona Ryder, Christian Slater and Shannon Doherty to name a few. The high school version of the musical rendition offers some different twists and turns, but follows the 80’s classic pretty close.
Before Veronica can get comfortable at the top of the high school popularity food chain, she falls in love with the dangerously handsome new kid named J.D. As she disapproves of the behavior of many of her classmates, Veronica and J.D. confront the clique leader Heather Chandler and accidentally poison her and from there the musical mystery takes a wild turn that is sure to entertain.
According to the playbill shared from Sutter Street Theatre’s Allen Schmeltz, Heathers is a, “hilarious, heartfelt and homicidal new show based on the greatest teen comedy of all time.” The play is directed locally by Mark Cornfield with musical direction by Christine Irish and choreography Dian Hoel.
The new show opens this Saturday and will run Saturdays and Sundays at 1:00 p.m. through April 2 at 1:00 p.m.
Murder on the Orient Express continues thru April 2
If you are seeking a murder mystery that dates back a few more years, don’t forget that Sutter Street Theatre continues to present Murder on the Orient Express on Fridays, Saturdays at 7:30 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. on Sundays.
Based on the book by Agatha Christie and adapted to for the stage by Ken Ludwig, this on the edge of your seat thriller follows the story of an American tycoon that ends up murdered in his compartment. Isolated and with a killer in their midst, the passengers rely on detective Hercule Poirot to identify the murderer.
