A whole new event is making its way to historic Sutter Street in Folsom this Friday, Sept. 3. It’s a night bannered to be a vibrant Day of the Dead Fiesta, better known as Dia de los Meurtos on the 700 block of Sutter Street.
The event will welcome singing and dancing along with the Mariachi Bonitas. This unique performance features the area’s top all female Mariachi band as they play traditional Mexican music.
The first time event will offer a number of fun activities, including do it yourself crafts for kids, face painting, as well as “Catrin and Catrina” costume contest. Visitors are encouraged to contribute their own mementos and memories to the community ofrenda that will be erected at the event, which is a decorated altar dedicated to those who have passed on.
“This is your chance to immerse yourself in the rich traditions of the beautiful Mexican holiday right here in Historic Folsom,” cites the event billing by the Folsom Historic District Association.
Día de los Muertos is a time-honored tradition in Mexico with origins that go back thousands of years. It is known as a tribute to the afterlife, a day meant to honor those who have died and keep their memory alive.
Unlike Halloween, which historically was a day to, “ward off evil spirits,” Day of the Dead came about in an effort to pay respects to loved ones who have died. Traditionally the celebration period takes place Nov. 1 and ends on Nov. 2.
