RANCHO CORDOVA — A man wielding a knife barricaded himself inside his Rancho Cordova home for several hours Thursday night, prompting a standoff with law enforcement that ended with his arrest early Friday morning, authorities said.
The Rancho Cordova Police Department and Sacramento County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to a residence on the 10000 block of White Rock Road around 7:45 p.m. after receiving reports of a domestic disturbance.
According to investigators, 52-year-old Rey Martinez was engaged in a verbal argument with his wife when a mutual friend attempted to mediate. Martinez then chased the individual out of the home with a knife, making several threats.
Martinez’s wife and child were able to escape before he returned inside and refused to come out, leading to an hours-long standoff.
Deputies attempted to negotiate with Martinez throughout the night, assisted by the Sheriff’s Special Enforcement Detail (SWAT) and the Critical Incident Negotiations Team. Officials said Martinez repeatedly refused to surrender and, at one point, told deputies to kill him.
Just before 1:30 a.m., SWAT officers and a K9 unit entered the residence and took Martinez into custody. He was transported to a hospital for treatment of injuries sustained during the K9 apprehension before being booked into the Sacramento County Main Jail.
