The El Dorado County community is mourning the sudden and unexpected passing of Fire Marshal and Division Chief Lucas Shepard who has spent nearly two decades in public service. Shepard passed away Friday afternoon while on vacation with his family, according to the El Dorado County Fire Protection District. 

Shepard began his career with the El Dorado County Fire Protection District as an apprentice firefighter in 2006. After graduating from the Sacramento Regional Fire Academy in 2007, he became a firefighter paramedic, a role in which he served with distinction. According to the district, it was his dedication and expertise that earned him a promotion to Fire Captain and Prevention Specialist in 2021, where he played a crucial role in fire prevention and safety education throughout the county. In December 2024, he reached the pinnacle of his career when he was named Fire Marshal, taking on the responsibility of ensuring the safety of countless residents.

Beyond his professional achievements, Shepard was known for his passion for service and his ability to bring people together in the name of safety. His leadership and dedication left an indelible mark on the El Dorado County Fire Protection District and the entire community he served, the district shared.

“We extend our deepest condolences to his family, friends, and colleagues during this difficult time. Chief Shepard’s legacy of service will not be forgotten,” the El Dorado County Fire Protection District said in a statement.

Shepard’s family is receiving support from the El Dorado County Fire Protection District, the El Dorado County Professional Firefighters Association, and other agencies. Information regarding services has not yet been released, but officials assure the public that details will be shared as soon as they are available.

At this time, officials have not released the cause or circumstances surrounding Shepard’s death.
