As temperatures continue to rise across the region, the El Dorado County Sheriff’s Office is reminding visitors and locals alike to prioritize safety when heading to area waterways, following a river rescue Sunday on the South Fork of the American River.

Two individuals unfamiliar with the local river conditions found themselves stranded near the Class III “Meat Grinder” rapid after attempting to navigate the swift waters using an inflatable swimming pool raft. The vessel was not designed for such terrain and began to deflate after striking multiple rocks, leaving the pair stranded mid-river.

Emergency crews from the El Dorado County Sheriff’s Office, CAL FIRE, and County Parks River Patrol responded quickly to the scene. The stranded individuals were provided with safety gear and transported to shore without injury.

The South Fork of the American River draws thousands of recreationalists each year. But with spring snowmelt continuing to feed into the waterways, currents remain swift and water temperatures dangerously cold. Conditions like these can turn a casual outing into a life-threatening emergency within moments — especially for those who are unprepared.

Authorities emphasize that proper planning, equipment, and awareness of river classifications are essential when recreating on the water. Inner tubes and pool rafts, while tempting in calm conditions, are not designed to withstand rocks, rapids, or cold, fast-moving water.

As summer approaches and more people head to the rivers to cool off, El Dorado County officials urge everyone to follow these safety precautions:

  • Use only approved life jackets
  • Avoid alcohol when recreating on the water
  • Understand river classifications and conditions before setting out
  • Never rely on recreational pool toys or rafts for river travel

With outdoor recreation increasing, public safety agencies across the region are asking the public to make smart choices that prevent rescues — or worse. For real-time updates, river conditions, and safety tips, residents are encouraged to follow local law enforcement and park service channels.
