FOLSOM – Step into a world of chocolate rivers, golden tickets, and unforgettable characters this weekend as El Dorado Musical Theatre (EDMT) opens its newest production, Roald Dahl’s Willy Wonka, on Stage One at Harris Center for the Arts in Folsom.
The curtain rises Saturday, July 5, for the first performance of this family-friendly musical that promises a whimsical journey through one of the most iconic children’s stories of all time. The show runs through July 13 with multiple performances featuring two alternating casts of young talent ranging from 6 years old through eighth grade, part of EDMT’s Rising Stars program.
Adapted from Roald Dahl’s beloved book Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Willy Wonka comes to life with the music and lyrics of Leslie Bricusse and Anthony Newley, including classic songs from the 1971 film starring Gene Wilder. Audiences can expect to hear favorites like “Pure Imagination” and “The Candy Man” alongside a collection of additional songs written for the stage.
The production follows the mysterious candy maker Willy Wonka as he announces a contest offering five golden ticket holders a chance to tour his secretive chocolate factory—and a lifetime supply of sweets. As the winners make their way through the dazzling world of Wonka’s candy empire, lessons are learned, mishaps unfold, and only one child proves worthy of the ultimate prize.
Under the direction of Brittany Lansford, with vocal direction by Scott Rivers and choreography by Kara Nakano, the show features colorful staging, dynamic movement, and creative costumes designed by Karen McConnell. The production is rated G and is suitable for all ages.
Performances begin Saturday, July 5 at 7:00 p.m., followed by multiple showtimes throughout the week, including matinee and evening performances on July 6, 9, 10, 11, 12, and 13. The use of two separate casts allows for an expanded run and offers a wider range of young performers the opportunity to take the stage.
Since its founding in 2001, El Dorado Musical Theatre has become one of the most respected youth theater organizations in the Western United States, known for producing professional-quality performances while helping young performers build confidence and skill through the performing arts.
