Summer tradition with storewide savings of 20% off is back July 12-13, or maybe a bit sooner if you’ve been good
As Folsom soars into summer’s hottest days, one local business is about to cool things down with a touch of holiday spirit. That’s right—Christmas is coming early once again as Dorothea’s Shoppe brings back its beloved Christmas in July celebration this weekend, Saturday and Sunday, July 12–13, on Sutter Street in Historic Folsom.
The popular event has become a local tradition at Dorothea’s, the year-round Christmas boutique at 801 Sutter Street, where visitors can find everything from collectible ornaments to festive decor and Folsom-themed gifts. Owned by longtime locals Jim and Sherri Metzker, the store has been spreading seasonal cheer in the middle of summer ever since the couple took over the shop more than a decade ago.
“Christmas in July has become a popular phrase in a lot of places,” said Jim Metzker. “Since our store is all about Christmas all year long, it makes perfect sense that we celebrate it—and our customers really look forward to it.”

The heart of the celebration, as always, is the storewide sale. Everything in the shop will be 20% off all weekend long, including their extensive collection of collectible ornaments, Department 56 villages, cards, candles, home décor, and holiday gifts you won’t find in department stores.
And for those who want to get a head start on the savings, there’s a special bonus for readers of this article. “If someone comes in on Friday, July 11, and tells us they saw this in Folsom Times, they’ll get the 20% off early,” Metzker added with a smile. “We like to keep it fun for everyone.”
In addition to the weekend discounts, Dorothea’s will debut a new collector’s class on Saturday. The class will offer tips on how to enhance your Department 56 village displays using accessories like mountains, landscapes, and backdrops—a feature that brings each miniature scene to life. Space is limited, and participation is first-come, first-served.
Dorothea’s continues to be one of Historic Folsom’s most unique shopping destinations. Originally founded in 1965 by two sisters and named after their third, the store has only changed hands once since opening. The previous owners are still part of the story, even returning during the holidays to lend a hand.

Under the Metzker family’s ownership since 2014, Dorothea’s has evolved while keeping its nostalgic roots alive. In addition to national brands like Jim Shore, Old World Christmas, Steinbach, and Kurt Adler, the store also stocks a wide range of Folsom-themed items, from Rainbow Bridge and Johnny Cash ornaments to gifts for local schools and colleges.
“We’ve created an experience here,” said Metzker. “It’s not just a store—it’s something you can’t find online. We have so many loyal customers who come back year after year. If you walk out of here in a bad mood, it’s your own fault.”
Dorothea’s Shoppe is open seven days a week from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., with extended hours during select Historic Folsom events. For more information on the store’s background, visit www.dorotheas.com. But to truly feel the magic, Metzker says, “you’ve got to come in and experience it.”
