Fourteen Kiwanis Clubs spanning Sacramento, El Dorado and Placer counties joined forces recently to collect more than 12,000 diapers for families served by Keaton’s Child Cancer Alliance. The large-scale effort brought together members from across Kiwanis Division 44, all working toward one common goal — easing the burden on parents navigating the challenges of pediatric cancer.
The collaboration began when Jessica Alonso, executive director of the Roseville-based nonprofit, reached out to the Kiwanis Club of Roseville seeking help with a critical diaper shortage. Club member Michelle McLean, whose husband Brian serves as lieutenant governor of Division 44, saw an opportunity to expand the request into a division-wide campaign.
“What started as a small request grew into an incredible outpouring of generosity,” McLean said.
Keaton’s Child Cancer Alliance provides resources and support to hundreds of families facing pediatric cancer. In a news advisory, the organization’s marketing director, Alicia Shrum, said the donation will have a direct impact. “This donation of diapers helps ease the burden, allowing families to focus on what matters most – caring for their child,” Shrum said.
The effort culminated last Friday as more than 100 boxes, filling several trucks, were delivered to the alliance’s Family Wellness Center. The supplies will be distributed to families across the region who are currently navigating the emotional and financial challenges of a childhood cancer diagnosis.
During the delivery, Kiwanis members and alliance staff noted that essentials like diapers can be overwhelming expenses for families already coping with the high costs of cancer treatment. By filling that gap, the Kiwanis Division 44 effort aims to bring comfort and relief to parents during one of the most difficult times of their lives.
