Authorities say death of 30-year-old jogger doesn’t appear to be suspicious at this time

Authorities have cleared the scene of an investigation off White Rock Road near Rancho Cordova where a body was found in the waters of the South Folsom Canal by a passerby. The investigation has now been handed over the Sacramento County Coroner. 

Units from the Sacramento Metropolitan Fire Department, Sacramento County Sheriffs Office and the Rancho Cordova Police Department were originally dispatched to a water rescue at 7:51 am after the victim was spotted by a passerby the area, who reportedly stopped at a nearby Starbucks to alert the authorities.

The body was located near White Rock Road and Sunrise Boulevard, the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office said.  Later Wednesday morning, authorities released additional details of the incident, sharing that the victim is a male and appears to be in his 30’s and was dressed in athletic or jogging attire.

The victim was pulled from the water and pronounced dead at the scene shortly after units arrived.

Following their investigation at the scene, at this time, investigators are ruling out suspicious activity or foul play surrounding the man’s death.  His car was reportedly located near the scene and his body was found relatively close to a ladder that extends down the interior wall of the canal into.

“It’s very challenging once you get in there to get out because the walls of the canal are so steep,” explained Parker Wilbourn of the Sacramento Metropolitan Fire District. 

The investigation has now been passed on to the Sacramento County Coroner.

The Folsom South Canal is an aqueduct diverts water from the American River at Nimbus Dam near Lake Natoma.  The canal travels about 26 miles south and terminates approximately 10 miles northeast of Lodi. The canal is operated by the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation, as part of the Auburn-Folsom South Unit of the Central Valley Project.
