Vacancy from longtime burger chain to be filled by Journey on the Dumpling in near future

A longtime burger place in Folsom’s dining scene is preparing to close its doors, as Red Robin Gourmet Burgers has announced it will permanently shut down its Palladio at Broadstone restaurant later this week.

The restaurant is scheduled to serve customers for the final time on Sunday, Jan. 25, marking the end of Red Robin’s long-running presence in the city. The closure is part of a broader nationwide effort by the company to reduce operating costs by trimming its restaurant footprint.

Red Robin has already closed several locations across the country in 2025, with additional closures planned through the end of the year and into early 2026. Company reports indicate Red Robin operated 401 company-owned restaurants and 90 franchise locations at the start of 2025. Corporate leadership has outlined a goal of reducing that number to approximately 393 company-owned restaurants by late 2025 and early 2026.

The Folsom restaurant has served local diners for decades and predates its current Palladio location. Before relocating to Palladio at Broadstone, Red Robin operated on Riley Street near the Kohl’s shopping center before moving to the newer retail development as it grew..

The brand’s roots stretch back more than 80 years. Red Robin began in Seattle in the 1940s as Sam’s Tavern, named after owner Sam, a barbershop quartet singer who loved the song “When the Red, Red Robin.” In 1969, entrepreneur Gerald Kingen purchased the tavern, dropped “Sam’s” from the name, expanded the menu to focus on gourmet burgers, and began franchising the concept. That shift fueled rapid national growth, eventually transforming Red Robin into one of the most recognizable casual dining chains in the country, now headquartered in Colorado.

Despite the closure, the Palladio restaurant space is not expected to remain vacant for long. Shopping center operators confirmed that Journey to the Dumpling will take over the former Red Robin location later this year.

Journey to the Dumpling is locally owned and operated by husband-and-wife team Chris and Yvonne Tan, who have built the restaurant around a passion for handmade dumplings and approachable Chinese comfort food. The couple set out to create what they describe as a family-friendly Chinese food haven, combining modern design with warm hospitality. Their concept emphasizes a welcoming atmosphere meant to be as inviting as their soup dumplings, pairing contemporary décor with a casual dining experience designed for both longtime fans of Chinese cuisine and newcomers alike.

The restaurant currently operates two Northern California locations, one in Elk Grove and another in Midtown Sacramento. Journey to the Dumpling opened its first location in Elk Grove in 2014 before expanding to Midtown Sacramento, where it has gained a strong following for its handmade dumplings and traditional dishes. Operators announced the upcoming Folsom location on social media, with plans to open at Palladio later this summer.

As previously reported by Folsom Times, Palladio at Broadstone continues to undergo significant changes in 2025, with several new businesses preparing to open in the coming months. Yard House is expected to open its doors within weeks, while Fire and Ice Games, Dumont Creamery, and additional retailers are also slated to join the shopping center.

While the closure of Red Robin marks the end of a longtime dining destination for many Folsom residents, the arrival of new locally owned and regional concepts reflects Palladio’s continued evolution and the broader shifts taking place in the restaurant industry.
