Playful scavenger hunt celebrates the beloved Sutter Street Pig with prizes, mini pigs and a live animal event

For years, Winnie the Pig has quietly become one of Historic Folsom’s most charming and recognizable characters. Known affectionately as the Sutter Street Pig, Winnie has delighted visitors and locals alike with his friendly presence, often stopping passersby in their tracks and becoming a favorite photo opportunity for families strolling the district.
Over time, Winnie has grown into more than just a beloved animal — he’s become a symbol of the unique, small-town charm that defines Historic Folsom and its tight-knit community of merchants and visitors.

That local legend is now taking center stage this spring as Historic Folsom launches a monthlong interactive adventure inspired by Winnie’s popularity.

From March 1 through March 29, Historic Folsom will host “Where’s Winnie? – A Hunt for the Sutter Street Pig,” an interactive scavenger hunt that encourages residents and visitors to explore the district while searching for Winnie and his many miniature lookalikes tucked throughout local businesses and sidewalks along Sutter Street.

Participants can join the fun by picking up a Winnie Passport at any participating shop in the district. With roughly 30 businesses taking part, the hunt is designed to stretch across Historic Folsom, inviting families to wander, discover new stores and connect with merchants along the way. Each location is home to a stuffed pig modeled after Winnie, stationed inside the shop for the entire month. When participants spot Winnie, they simply point him out to the shopkeeper and receive a signature or stamp in their passport, with the goal of collecting as many as possible by the end of the event.

The adventure continues outdoors with the hunt for Mini Winnies, small plastic pigs hidden throughout the sidewalks and public spaces of the district. About 100 of these tiny pigs will be placed each week. Each Mini Winnie features the name of a local merchant and can be found and kept as a souvenir, or traded at the named business for a small treat such as a sticker or piece of candy.

One of the highlights of the month arrives on March 22, when Historic Folsom Plaza hosts “Pigs in the Plaza,” a special event featuring real pigs on display from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The free, family-friendly experience is presented by Sacramento Barnyard Bidders and has become a fan-favorite attraction for animal lovers of all ages, offering a rare up-close look at the animals that inspired Winnie’s local fame.

The scavenger hunt officially concludes at noon on March 29, when completed or nearly completed passports must be turned in at Snooks to be eligible for prizes. Participants are reminded to clearly fill in their name and contact information on their passports. The grand prize drawing will then take place later that day at 2 p.m. in front of Snooks, with winners selected from eligible entries following the event’s conclusion.
