El Dorado Musical Theatre (EDMT) presents Seussical, a fantastical musical that brings Dr. Seuss’s beloved characters to life. Running November 15–24, 2024, at the Harris Center in Folsom, this colorful production features a cast of young performers aged 6–20 and is directed and choreographed by Debbie Wilson. Rated G, the show is a perfect outing for families, blending heartwarming themes of loyalty, imagination, and community with stunning visuals and memorable music.
In this vibrant tale, the mischievous Cat in the Hat serves as the playful narrator, seamlessly guiding the audience through a tapestry of whimsical worlds. He introduces Jojo, a young Who with a vivid imagination, and Horton the Elephant, a kind-hearted protector who discovers the Whos living on a speck of dust.
Horton’s dedication is met with skepticism by characters like the Wickersham Brothers, a mischievous trio who cause trouble at every turn, and the sharp-tongued Sour Kangaroo. Meanwhile, Gertrude McFuzz embarks on her journey of self-discovery, learning to embrace her unique qualities, highlighted in songs like “The One Feather Tail of Miss Gertrude McFuzz” and “Notice Me, Horton.”
The dazzling Mayzie LaBird takes the spotlight with her show-stopping numbers “Amayzing Mayzie” and “Mayzie in Palm Beach,” showcasing her flamboyant and carefree personality. Adding to the chaos are the Bird Girls, who bring harmony and flair, and Yurtle the Turtle, who presides over a comical courtroom scene during “The People Versus Horton the Elephant.”
The musical numbers are as diverse and colorful as the characters themselves, including standout songs like the whimsical “Oh, The Thinks You Can Think,” the tender duet “Alone in the Universe,” and the infectious “Green Eggs and Ham.” From the jubilant “It’s Possible (McElligot’s Pool)” to the heartfelt “How Lucky You Are,” the music captivates audiences, bringing Dr. Seuss’s world to life.
