Families looking for a unique way to celebrate the July 4th holiday weekend can hop aboard a historic rail motorcar for a one-of-a-kind barbecue adventure through the heart of Folsom. The “BBQ Express” event, hosted by Placerville and Sacramento Valley Rail Road, returns Saturday and Sunday, July 5–6, offering short scenic rides, old-fashioned handcar fun, and a hearty lunch experience at the secluded Willow Springs Grotto.

Departing from the Oak Avenue Parkway Station adjacent to Family Fitness, passengers will board vintage rail motorcars for a short but memorable journey through wooded terrain along Willow Creek. The destination is Willow Springs Grotto, a shaded picnic and event space tucked into nature, where guests will enjoy a barbecue meal and the laid-back ambiance of this hidden local treasure.

The full experience typically lasts between 60 to 90 minutes, giving guests plenty of time to enjoy their meal and explore. Adding to the fun, volunteers from the Folsom Handcar Derby will be on site offering guests the chance to ride a traditional handcar — pumping themselves down a stretch of track the old-fashioned way, just like 19th-century rail workers once did.

Whether you’re treating dad to a belated Father’s Day gift or simply looking for a fun local outing, this family-friendly excursion blends history, recreation, and great food.

Motorcars depart every 30 minutes throughout the day. Guests are welcome to stay and enjoy the grotto for as long as they like after arrival. Adult tickets (ages 13 and up) are $38, children ages 5–12 are $18, and children 3 and under ride free as lap passengers. Each adult can register up to five lap children during the online checkout process.

Advance reservations are required, and no tickets will be sold onsite due to limited capacity and food preparation. All ticket sales are non-refundable, but exchanges can be arranged if plans change.
