RANCHO CORDOVA- A 38-year-old man remained in custody Wednesday afternoon on $1M bail after he was caught in the act of setting a fire by Sacramento Metropolitan Fire officials in Rancho Cordova Tuesday morning. 

At approximately 8:25 a.m. on Tuesday, units from the Sacramento Metropolitan Fire District were dispatched to a grass fire east of 1941 Zinfandel Drive, along Sunrise Boulevard in Rancho Cordova. Firefighters arrived to an active fire approximately 80 feet by 20 feet in size and quickly extinguished it without any issues, according to a report shared by Metro Fire.

Shortly after the call, a Sacramento Metropolitan Fire battalion chief was driving southbound on Sunrise Boulevard when he observed an adult male who set fire to vegetation located in the concrete island located near the eastbound on ramp to Highway 50. Law enforcement officers responded to the area and apprehended the suspect, who was later identified as Levi Coon, 38. 

According to the Metro Fire report, Coon admitted to setting both of the fires with a lighter. He was taken into custody and booked in the Sacramento County Jail where he is being charged with felony arson. Coon is being held on $1,000,000 bail according to jail records.

Coon is expected to make his first appearance in Sacramento County Court at 3:00 p.m. Thursday, May 30.  Arrest records show Coon has been arrested multiple times in the past in Tuolumne County which included previous arrests for arson, drug possession and exhibiting a deadly weapon from 2017 through 2020.
