The Sacramento County Sheriffs Department is on the scene of an investigation Wednesday morning after a body was found floating in the water way known as the Folsom South Canal on the south side of Rancho Cordova on Wednesday morning.

Units from the Sacramento Metropolitan Fire Department, Sacramento County Sheriffs Office and the Rancho Cordova Police Department were originally dispatched to a water rescue at 7:51 am after the victim was spotted by a passerby the area, who reportedly stopped at a nearby Starbucks to alert the authorities.
At this time investigators remain on scene as the area is an active investigation site. Investigators are hoping to make contact with the reporting party as part of their investigation and it is unknown where the body may have originally entered the canal.
The Folsom South Canal is an aqueduct diverts water from the American River at Nimbus Dam near Lake Natoma. The canal travels about 26 miles south and terminates approximately 10 miles northeast of Lodi.
The canal is operated by the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation, as part of the Auburn-Folsom South Unit of the Central Valley Project.
