Since being elected in 2022, I have worked to bring greater attention to our city’s budgeting process. For years, the council was told we had a balanced budget and were shown a healthy reserve fund—yet at the same time warned we were heading toward a structural deficit. Budgets relied on hopeful revenue and expense projections rather than actual numbers, and the picture simply didn’t add up.
Year after year, expenses climbed into the millions beyond what council had approved. I asked for accountability and documentation to explain why, but no answers were given that justified overspending past the approved budget, and the overspending continued, consuming the increased revenue from our development and growth. What was presented as a balanced budget simply did not match reality, creating confusion and distrust between residents, myself included, and the city.
This year marks a turning point. For the first time, we were presented with the truth: a budget that did not balance. While painful to see in print, it reflects reality. No longer are the council and community being misled—we can now clearly see our true situation, which is the first step toward rebuilding trust and stability.
With our new City Manager, who started in March, we are seeing a real shift toward accuracy and accountability. Together, the current City Council, staff, and City Manager are building a culture where expenses stay within the budget we approve, every dollar is tracked, and priorities are clear. There is a willingness to have the tough conversations, and we as a council are united in supporting this approach. The result is a stronger, more transparent process that residents can trust.
This past Tuesday, we passed a resolution that balanced our budget that required making tough decisions based on real numbers and true costs. While it may feel difficult to confront, it provides clarity, stability, and a clear path forward.
We are now in the stabilization phase. This means: No more surprises of millions in extra expenses. Every dollar accounted for. Your voice matters in setting priorities.
Today, with the support of our City Manager, the council is working together better than ever to set clear priorities and direction for the future. We are rebuilding trust—through honesty, accountability, and a more transparent process. Together, we are creating a healthier financial future for our city—one that is stable, transparent, and sustainable.
As we move forward, my vision remains the same: that we become the safest and most prosperous city in the region. I am always happy to meet with anyone who wants to learn more about how we got here and where we’re going next.
