RANCHO CORDOVA- After a long absence, the U.S. Navy Blue Angels are making a thrilling return to the skies over Sacramento. The elite flight team is headlining the 2025 California Capital Airshow, scheduled for March 22-23 at Mather Airport, which was announced Thursday by show organizers.

This marks the Blue Angels’ first Sacramento performance since 2019, bringing their signature high-speed, precision aerobatics back to the region. Fans can expect jaw-dropping stunts and formations as the squadron showcases their F/A-18 Super Hornets.

“We are so excited to have the Blue Angels back!” said Darcy Brewer, Executive Director of the California Capital Airshow. “Their return to Sacramento has been highly anticipated, and we’re proud to be one of the team’s first stops following their Winter training.” 

The Blue Angels are the U.S. Navy’s elite flight demonstration squadron, renowned for their high-speed, precision aerobatic displays. Established in 1946, they are one of the oldest formal military aerobatic teams in the world. The squadron was created by Admiral Chester W. Nimitz, then-Chief of Naval Operations, in an effort to maintain public interest in naval aviation after World War II and to showcase the skill and professionalism of Navy and Marine Corps aviators.

The Blue Angels’ performances feature intricate formations and daring maneuvers, often with planes flying just a few feet apart at speeds exceeding 700 mph. Over the years, the team has used several different aircraft, including the Grumman F6F Hellcat, the F-9 Panther, and the A-4 Skyhawk. Currently, they fly the F/A-18E/F Super Hornet, a versatile fighter jet designed for both air-to-air and air-to-ground combat. Their show-stopping routines, like the diamond formation and the solo high-speed passes, demonstrate the combination of skill, discipline, and teamwork required for military aviation.

The Blue Angels travel across the United States and occasionally internationally, performing at airshows and special events. Their missions go beyond entertainment—they also serve as a recruitment tool for the Navy and Marines, inspiring young people to consider careers in the armed forces. Throughout their history, the Blue Angels have become a symbol of American military excellence, combining technical mastery with the values of honor, courage, and commitment.

The California Capital Airshow, one of the largest in the country, draws tens of thousands of visitors each year. In 2025, it is expected to be even bigger, with the return of the Blue Angels providing an extra boost of excitement.
