The Blue Angels are the U.S. Navy’s elite flight demonstration squadron, renowned for their high-speed, precision aerobatic displays. Established in 1946, they are one of the oldest formal military aerobatic teams in the world. The squadron was created by Admiral Chester W. Nimitz, then-Chief of Naval Operations, in an effort to maintain public interest in naval aviation after World War II and to showcase the skill and professionalism of Navy and Marine Corps aviators.
The Blue Angels’ performances feature intricate formations and daring maneuvers, often with planes flying just a few feet apart at speeds exceeding 700 mph. Over the years, the team has used several different aircraft, including the Grumman F6F Hellcat, the F-9 Panther, and the A-4 Skyhawk. Currently, they fly the F/A-18E/F Super Hornet, a versatile fighter jet designed for both air-to-air and air-to-ground combat. Their show-stopping routines, like the diamond formation and the solo high-speed passes, demonstrate the combination of skill, discipline, and teamwork required for military aviation.
The Blue Angels travel across the United States and occasionally internationally, performing at airshows and special events. Their missions go beyond entertainment—they also serve as a recruitment tool for the Navy and Marines, inspiring young people to consider careers in the armed forces. Throughout their history, the Blue Angels have become a symbol of American military excellence, combining technical mastery with the values of honor, courage, and commitment.
“We are so excited to have the Blue Angels back,” said Brewer. “Their return to Sacramento has been highly anticipated, and we’re proud to be one of the team’s first stops following their Winter training.”
