EL DORADO HILLS—The El Dorado Hills Fire Department stepped in to provide some much-needed relief early Saturday morning—not for residents, but for a group of overheated cattle stranded on the side of Latrobe Road.
The incident occurred just south of White Rock Road, when a transport truck carrying livestock broke down under the rising heat of the morning sun. With temperatures already climbing rapidly amid an early season heatwave, firefighters responded to a report of “cows in distress” and arrived to find the animals exposed to the elements with no available shade.
Crews quickly deployed hose lines to provide a steady mist of water over the cattle, helping bring down their body temperatures and prevent heat-related illness. Responders remained on scene until alternate transportation arrangements were made. No injuries were reported.
The situation highlights the current excessive heat in the Sacramento region, which has been experiencing unseasonably high temperatures. Saturday’s forecast called for a high of 103 degrees, following several consecutive days of near-triple-digit heat across the region.
A slight cooling trend is expected beginning Sunday, with daytime highs dipping to 90 degrees, followed by highs of 87 and 88 degrees on Monday and Tuesday. Overnight lows will remain in the upper 50s.
Local officials continue to advise residents to stay alert during periods of extreme heat—stay hydrated, limit time outdoors during peak temperatures, and ensure pets and livestock have access to shade and water.
