A phrase attributed to the late great Dr. Suess uttered the words, “You’re never too old , too wacky, too wild, too pick up a book and read to a child.”
Students at Empire Oaks Elementary School had a group of special guest Thursday that did just what the legendary Doc suggested as part of National Read Across America Day.
The City of Folsom, working together with the Folsom Cordova Unified School District to bring a group that included city leaders, dignitaries, first responders and public service employees to area schools to celebrate the special day by reading with area students. Empire Oaks was one of the participating campuses.
Read Across America Day is presented by the National Education Association. While the NEA’s Read Across America celebrates reading year-round, March 2 is a special day annually to call attention to the efforts of educators, parents, and others who motivate and teach children to read
Thursday’s events were enjoyed by the students and adults alike as they came together to share in the celebration. The NEA launched Read Across America in 1998 as a year-round program to celebrate reading. Given author Dr. Seuss’ impact on the reading world, his birthday (March 2) was declared Read Across America Day.
The NEA today consists of more than 3 million people, including educators, students, activists, workers, parents, neighbors and more, all who believe in opportunity for all students and in the power of public education to transform lives and create a more just and inclusive society.
