It was a “Dog’s Day,” for many this past weekend at the Sacramento County Bradshaw Animal Shelter as the community stepped up and helped the facility combat its recent overcrowding debacle it found itself in.
“It’s truly heartwarming to see our shelter’s lobby full of people who are ready to open their hearts and their homes to a pet in need,” said Luna Anona. “Anona is the public information officers for Sacramento County Animal Care Services and the Bradshaw Animal Shelter. “We are fortunate to be surrounded by a wonderful community of animal lovers, and we are very thankful for their support.”
Last week, the area shelter was struggling to house the large population of dogs it had acquired recently. In a shelter that is designed to house approximately 150 K-9’s, shelter staff and volunteers were working to accommodate some 251 resident dogs and puppies.
Heading into the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday weekend, shelter officials made the decision to waive all fees associated with adopting a dog from the facility, as previously reported in a Folsom Times article. That decision paid off as 126 dogs were adopted into new homes over the weekend.
In addition to waiving the adoption fees, the shelter offered those adopting a dog during the crucial period no charge spay and neutering. They were also microchipped and vaccinated, free of charge as well as licensed for one-year, as an appreciation for those making the commitment to adopt a dog or puppy in need of a home in Sacramento County.
While the recent promotional efforts helped engage the community to step in during the time of need, the shelter is still “well stocked” with dogs in need of homes. Those willing to consider adopting a new family member, or perhaps a friend for one you recently adopted can view dogs that are currently up for adoption can be viewed here.
The site is updated almost daily with new arrivals and additions that are deemed ready for adoption. The Bradshaw Animal Shelter is located at 3839 Bradshaw Road. and is open Tuesday through Sunday from noon to 5 p.m. and Wednesday from noon to 6 p.m.
