A man who shot into an occupied apartment in Rancho Cordova late Sunday night is in the Sacramento County Jail without the option of bail after an hours long standoff with Sheriff’s Deputies at his apartment in northern Sacramento County

At approximately 11:45 PM on Sunday, September 8, several callers reported a shooting at an apartment complex on the 9800 block of Lincoln Village Drive in Rancho Cordova. Officers from the Rancho Cordova Police Department responded and discovered that a male subject, later identified as 32-year-old Elijah Rodriguez, had shot a handgun into his ex-girlfriend’s apartment and then pistol-whipped her boyfriend. Rodriguez then fled the scene with his 3-year-old child.

Sacramento County Sheriff’s Deputies located Rodriguez’s vehicle near his apartment on the 4300 block of Galbrath Drive in North Highlands. Deputies attempted to call the suspect outside, but he refused to communicate with Deputies, much less exit the apartment. Officers called for additional resources, surrounded Rodriguez’s apartment, and continued to call him out to surrender. The Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office Special Enforcement Detail (SWAT Team), Critical Incident Negotiations Team (CINT), K9, and several other Sheriff’s assets were dispatched to the scene.

Deputies and Officers attempted to contact Rodriguez via phone, text message, and PA announcements, all to no avail. Sheriff’s Office Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) were also deployed, and hours later, they were able to establish communication with Rodriguez, according to a report from the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Department.

Just before 6:30 AM on Monday, after nearly six hours of negotiations, Rodriguez surrendered peacefully and was taken into custody without further incident. He was transported and booked into the Sacramento County Main Jail, where he remains ineligible for bail. He is scheduled to appear in court on September 11.
