Jordan Murray, 25, was granted Mental Health Diversion from prior felonies
FAIR OAKS – An arrest was made in the deadly weekend stabbing that occurred near a popular Fair Oaks bar and billiards hall, and the suspect now in custody had previously been released from jail through a mental health diversion program—despite a violent criminal history, according to the Sheriff’s Office report.
Just before 8 p.m. on Sunday, May 18, Sacramento County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to an assault call in the 10000 block of Fair Oaks Boulevard near Sunrise Boulevard. When deputies arrived, they found a 40-year-old man lying in a parking lot with multiple stab wounds. Deputies rendered first aid until fire personnel arrived, but the victim was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the Sheriff’s Office report.
Sheriff’s Homicide Detectives and Crime Scene Investigators launched a full investigation, collecting evidence and interviewing witnesses. According to the Sheriff’s Office report, the victim had been involved in a physical altercation with several individuals, including the suspect, later identified as 25-year-old Jordan Murray. After the initial fight ended and all parties separated, the victim reportedly encountered Murray and another person from the earlier confrontation. At that point, Murray pulled a knife from his pocket and stabbed the victim in the chest, causing a fatal injury.
Detectives with the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Major Crimes Bureau located and arrested Murray Monday morning in South Sacramento County without incident. He has since been booked into the Sacramento County Main Jail and is scheduled to appear in court on May 22.
According to the Sheriff’s Office report, Murray had a documented history of violence, including two felony robberies committed in 2024. In one case, he attacked a Dollar Tree employee on Sunrise Boulevard by spraying them in the face with a caustic chemical before fleeing. In a separate incident that June, he assaulted another employee in a similar fashion during a robbery in Fair Oaks, stealing an electric bike before being apprehended by deputies.
Despite the violent nature of both crimes, Murray was granted mental health diversion by the courts in November 2024 and released from custody. Less than six months later, he allegedly committed Sunday’s fatal stabbing.
The investigation remains active, and anyone with additional information is encouraged to contact the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office.
