A Sacramento County sheriff’s deputy who tragically lost his life in the line of duty six years ago was honored on the anniversary of the tragedy in Rancho Cordova in an emotional dedication of a police facility that will now carry his name upon it.
The late Deputy Mark Stasyuk was honored with a room named in his memory at the Rancho Cordova Police Department facility, in the community he served and where he was well-known. The event welcomed officials from both departments, as well as family members of the late deputy.
“Today, we had the honor of dedicating the Mark Stasyuk Room at the Rancho Cordova Police Station. This special room is named in memory of Deputy Mark Stasyuk,” said a statement from the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office. “This room stands as a lasting tribute to his sacrifice and a place of reflection for all who serve. We will always remember Mark’s dedication to keeping Rancho Cordova safe, and his legacy will live on.”
On Sept. 17, 2018, Deputy Stasyuk and Officer Julie Robertson responded to a call about a verbal disturbance at a local auto parts store. Upon attempting to contact the suspect, a gun battle ensued, and Deputy Stasyuk was fatally wounded. Officer Robertson sustained gunshot wounds as she engaged the suspect in a close-quarters gunfight inside the store. The suspect fled the scene but was captured a short distance away. Officer Robertson attempted to render first aid to Deputy Stasyuk, but he succumbed to his injuries shortly thereafter.
Deputy Stasyuk was a four-and-a-half-year veteran of the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office, whose aspiration was to serve his community in Rancho Cordova as a police officer. A highly energetic, friendly, and motivated officer, Stasyuk was an asset to his community, RCPD, and the law enforcement profession. His loss will never be forgotten.
“His courage, commitment, and service to our community will never be forgotten,” the department added.
