In a time when healing the planet is as urgent as healing patients, a local hospital is being recognized for doing both—earning top honors for its environmental impact while continuing to care for the Folsom community.
Folsom, CA – Practice Greenhealth has awarded all five Dignity Health Sacramento hospitals, including Mercy Hospital of Folsom, the 2025 Environmental Excellence Award, the nation’s highest honor for healthcare facilities demonstrating leadership in sustainability, environmental stewardship, and climate resilience.
“This award reflects the commitment of our teams to act with intention and accountability – not just in how we care for patients, but in how we care for our planet,” said Lisa Hausmann, President and CEO of Mercy Hospital of Folsom. “We are proud to be part of a national movement working toward climate-resilient healthcare.”
In 2024, Mercy Hospital of Folsom made significant progress in cutting waste and greenhouse gas emissions. These sustainability efforts included shredding 60.3 tons of paper, which saved 1,025 trees, 422,240 gallons of water, 181 cubic yards of landfill space, and 22,922 gallons of oil. The hospital also recycled 1.7 tons of mixed recycling including cardboard, 2.7 tons of electronics, and 0.75 tons of batteries. Additionally, Mercy Hospital composted 2.4 tons of material, recycled approximately 1 ton of blue wrap from operating rooms, and donated 1.7 tons of food through collaboration with Replate.
Dignity Health, a member of CommonSpirit Health, is advancing sustainability efforts as part of the CommonSpirit Health Climate Action Plan. With a commitment to reach net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2040 and a 50% reduction in operational emissions by 2030, Dignity Health is taking bold steps to recognize environmental protection as a vital part of improving health for all.
“The climate crisis is one of the greatest public health challenges of our time, and we are committed to doing our part to create healthier communities and a healthier planet,” said Greg Rold, Director of Mission Integration for Dignity Health’s Greater Sacramento Market. “These recognitions affirm the deep alignment between our healing mission and our environmental practices.”
Awarded hospitals include Dignity Health Mercy Hospital of Folsom, Dignity Health Woodland Memorial Hospital, Dignity Health Mercy General Hospital, Dignity Health Mercy San Juan Medical Center, and Dignity Health Methodist Hospital of Sacramento.
Each facility received the Greenhealth Partner for Change Award, which recognizes healthcare institutions that are making measurable progress in sustainability and environmental performance. Honorees demonstrate excellence across multiple areas, including energy and water conservation, waste reduction, and mercury elimination.
