Statewide measures: California voters want change in crime penalties, no wage increase or rent control

California voters passed several state ballot measures supporting education, marriage rights, climate resilience, healthcare, and criminal sentencing while rejecting others on housing, labor, and wage issues.

Proposition 2, authorizing bonds for public school and college facilities, passed with 56.9% of the vote. Similarly, Proposition 3, which establishes a constitutional right to marriage, won broad support with 61.1% approval. Environmental priorities gained traction with Proposition 4, which provides funding for water, wildfire, and climate risk projects, passing at 57.9%.

Healthcare measures fared well, with Proposition 34, which restricts the use of prescription revenue, passing narrowly at 51.5%, and Proposition 35, securing permanent Medi-Cal funding, receiving 66.8% support. Proposition 36, increasing sentencing for certain drug and theft offenses, passed decisively with 70.4% in favor, showing strong voter support for tougher criminal penalties.

However, some measures failed to resonate with voters. Proposition 5, proposing bonds for affordable housing and infrastructure, was rejected by 55.8%. Voters also defeated Proposition 6, which aimed to eliminate mandatory inmate labor, with 54.9% voting against it. Proposition 32, which sought to raise the minimum wage, narrowly failed with 52% opposed, reflecting voter caution on economic measures. Finally, Proposition 33, which would have allowed local governments to implement residential rent control, was soundly defeated, with 61.6% voting no.

Statewide Measures updated results. Updated Nov. 6, 5:34 a.m. with 94.9% of precincts partially reporting.
