Members of school’s Kindness Club arrange visit to Prairie City Landing to create crafts, connection and heartfelt moments across generations

Acts of kindness were on full display Thursday as students from Folsom Preparatory School crossed the street to neighboring Prairie City Landing adult community, spending time creating Valentine’s-themed crafts and heartfelt memories with local seniors.

The visit, organized through the school’s Kindness Club, brought together one kindergarten class and student leaders from the club for an afternoon filled with construction paper flowers, handmade valentines and colorful decorations. Seated side by side at long tables, children and residents worked together carefully placing stickers, taping paper stems and adding final touches to bright floral creations — small gestures that carried big smiles.

The idea for the Valentine outreach originated with parents serving on Folsom Prep’s Student Life Committee and was later presented to the Kindness Club, where students enthusiastically embraced the opportunity to connect with their neighbors across the street.

“Our kindness club was started by a student who wanted to spread kindness,” said Candis Murawski, M.Ed., head of school at Folsom Preparatory. “They came to me with a plan of what they wanted to do and found a staff member that was willing to facilitate it with them. They meet once a week in the library at lunch and will do different activities together that are planned by the students in charge. They also created a kindness bulletin board in the hallway. Recently, they planned our Kindness Challenge Week.”

That student-led spirit was evident throughout the visit. Kindergarteners eagerly showed residents their colorful designs while older Kindness Club members helped guide conversations and assist with craft supplies. For many seniors, the interaction offered more than a creative outlet — it provided meaningful connection.

Prairie City Landing, located at 645 Willard Drive in Folsom offers Independent Living, Assisted Living and Memory Care services under a “different by design” philosophy that allows residents to transition between levels of care without relocating to a different apartment. The community’s Harbor memory care neighborhood provides a secure, specialized environment focused on cognitive engagement and joyful daily living.

On Thursday, that philosophy of joyful engagement was amplified by the laughter and energy of visiting students. Residents leaned in closely to help tape paper stems, carefully guided small hands with glue dots and admired each completed Valentine bouquet. Conversations flowed easily as generations shared stories, encouragement and gratitude.

Folsom Preparatory School, which serves students from transitional kindergarten through fifth grade and will launch sixth grade in the 2026–27 school year, emphasizes character development alongside academic excellence. The school is a Kindness Certified School and encourages leadership and service through its WOW leadership teams and student clubs. Students have access to a rigorous curriculum aligned with California standards, as well as enrichment offerings including S.T.E.A.M., art, music, technology and physical education, supported by an Engineering Design Lab and 1:1 computers for upper grades.

Thursday’s visit exemplified that mission in action.

While they certainly could have brought smiles by merely delivering handmade cards, students invested time — sitting, listening and creating alongside residents and warming hearts beyond measure. The result was a shared experience that brightened the day for both generations and reinforced a powerful lesson: kindness, when practiced intentionally, builds bridges across any age.

For Prairie City Landing residents, the Valentine crafts will serve as cheerful decorations. For the students, the memory of spreading joy may last far longer.
