Blue Angels top huge list of performers for March 22-23 that brings thousands into the region

MATHER -With less than three weeks to go, anticipation is soaring for the 2025 California Capital Airshow, set to take over the skies above Mather Airport on March 22 and 23. This annual spectacle, one of the nation’s premier aviation events, promises to deliver heart-pounding aerobatics, breathtaking demonstrations, and an up-close look at some of the most legendary aircraft in military and civilian aviation history.

Presented by Sacramento County in partnership with the City of Rancho Cordova, the airshow will be the marquee event of the Navy Office of Community Outreach’s “Navy Week” in Sacramento. This year’s show holds special significance as it marks the 250th anniversary of the United States Navy. As one of only 15 host cities selected for Navy Week celebrations, Sacramento is gearing up for a weekend of thrilling performances, educational exhibits, and unparalleled displays of military might and aviation excellence.

The undisputed stars of the show are the U.S. Navy Blue Angels, who will make their highly anticipated return to the Sacramento skies for the first time since 2019. Flying their iconic F/A-18E/F Super Hornets, the Blue Angels will demonstrate their signature precision formations and gravity-defying stunts, showcasing the skill, discipline, and teamwork of the Navy and Marine Corps aviators. Expect to witness their breathtaking diamond formation, heart-stopping solo passes, and exhilarating maneuvers that have captivated audiences around the world for decades.

“It is a tremendous honor to partner with the Department of the Navy to bring the Blue Angels to Sacramento and celebrate the military branch’s 250th birthday,” said Darcy Brewer, Executive Director of California Capital Airshow. “Throughout Navy Week and at the Airshow, attendees can look forward to fascinating educational exhibits that showcase the Navy’s history, mission and career opportunities. We’ll have a specially-curated selection of aircraft and other naval assets on display at the Airshow, as well.”

The excitement doesn’t stop there. The U.S. Air Force F-16 Demonstration Team will bring the raw power and agility of the F-16 Fighting Falcon to the skies, showcasing high-speed maneuvers and combat capabilities that make this jet a key player in air superiority missions. Joining them is the C-17 Globemaster III Demo Team, offering a rare look at the remarkable versatility of this massive transport aircraft, which is capable of carrying tanks, troops, and cargo across the globe while executing pinpoint landings in challenging environments.

History will also take flight as a stunning array of vintage warbirds roars over Mather Airport. Attendees will have the chance to see legendary aircraft like the P-51 Mustang, P-40 Warhawk, SBD Dauntless, and the fearsome Vought F4U Corsair. These planes played pivotal roles in key battles of World War II, from the Pacific Theater to the skies over Europe, and their presence at the airshow serves as a living tribute to the brave pilots who flew them.

The P-40 was the United States’ best fighter available in large numbers when World War II began. P-40s engaged Japanese aircraft at Pearl Harbor and in the Philippines in December 1941. They also served with the famed Flying Tigers in China in 1942, and in North Africa in 1943 with the 99th Fighter Squadron, the first African American U.S. fighter unit. The solid, reliable Warhawk was used in many combat areas — the Aleutian Islands, Italy, the Middle East, the Far East, the Southwest Pacific and some were sent to Russia. Though often slower and less maneuverable than its adversaries, the P-40 earned a reputation in battle for extreme ruggedness. It served throughout the war but was eclipsed by more capable aircraft. More than 14,000 P-40s were built, and they served in the air forces of 28 nations.

For those fascinated by high-altitude reconnaissance, the legendary U-2 Dragon Lady will be on display. This cutting-edge aircraft, which has operated at the edge of space since the 1950s, continues to play a critical role in intelligence gathering for the U.S. military and NASA. Meanwhile, the P-38 Lightning, known as the “Fork-Tailed Devil” by enemy pilots, will offer spectators a glimpse into the incredible engineering that made it one of the most versatile fighters of World War II.

Beyond the exhilarating aerial performances, the airshow offers an incredible ground display featuring historic and modern aircraft. Guests will be able to walk up to and even step inside some of the most famous military planes in history, including the B-25 Mitchell bomber, the Republic P-47 Thunderbolt, and the Grumman TBM Avenger. This interactive experience provides a rare opportunity to appreciate these aircraft up close, meet the pilots and crews, and learn about the rich history of military aviation.

With thousands of spectators expected to attend, organizers are urging fans to secure their tickets as soon as possible. Tickets are selling fast and will not be available for purchase at the event.
