The energy is building, and the countdown is on as the 32nd Annual Folsom Handcar Derby prepares to roll into town May 24-25. Held along the rails in front of Broadstone Marketplace on East Bidwell Street, the event promises two thrilling days of high-speed competition, community spirit, and good old-fashioned fun in the heart of Folsom.
A staple of the local spring calendar, the Folsom Handcar Derby brings together businesses, charities, and rail enthusiasts for a one-of-a-kind competition that tests strength, speed, and teamwork. Since 1991, the Folsom, El Dorado, and Sacramento Historical Railroad Association has proudly hosted the event, drawing thousands of participants and spectators over the years.
Entries are still open for teams eager to compete in this exciting tradition. Five-person teams—made up of one pusher and four pumpers—will battle it out across men’s, women’s, co-ed, and masters divisions, with times electronically measured to an impressive 1/1000th of a second. It’s a true test of power, endurance, and synchronization that has thrilled onlookers and racers alike for more than three decades.
The weekend festivities kick off Saturday, May 24, when teams will complete a safety orientation and timed practice runs. The real action gets underway early Sunday morning, May 25, starting at 9 a.m. with the fan-favorite Pusher’s Contest. Participants in this solo event test their muscle by pushing an 850-pound handcar as far as possible, split into men’s and women’s categories.
Following the push-off, the derby heats officially begin. Teams pump their way to victory in head-to-head heats, while cheering spectators line the tracks for a front-row seat to the high-speed action. Also returning is the unique quadripede race—a two-person event featuring a special four-wheeled rail-riding contraption that’s the only one of its kind anywhere in the world.
While the excitement of competition remains the heart of the weekend, there is a bittersweet note to this year’s race. Organizers have announced that 2025 will likely mark the final official running of the derby, citing rising challenges with event coordination, funding, and volunteer recruitment. After 32 years, they hope to see the community come out in force to celebrate one last time.
Admission to the event is free, and families are encouraged to come out, enjoy the races, and support a great cause. Proceeds benefit the Folsom, El Dorado, and Sacramento Historical Railroad Association’s ongoing efforts to preserve and promote the region’s historic railways.
Teams interested in competing can find the official entry form and information at www.HandcarDerby.com or by calling (916) 496-5032. Final race schedules and additional event details will be posted as race weekend approaches.
