FAIR OAKS – The Sacramento County Sheriff’s Department has evacuated a Fair Oaks apartment complex late Friday morning in response to what they are referring to as an ongoing active shooting situation. Authorities say the suspect is hiding within a unit in the complex, which is has been cleared of residents and several nearby roadways have been barricaded off to traffic.

The incident unfolded around 10:05 a.m. at the Hazel Ranch Apartments located on the 8800 block of Winding Way near Hazel Avenue. A resident reported gunfire directed at their home, with a bullet discovered on the premises. Sheriff’s deputies responded promptly, engaging with the suspect, though details surrounding the encounter remain unclear, shots were reportedly fired at the suspect by deputies. The situation quickly prompted the evacuation of the Hazel Ranch apartment complex shortly before 11 a.m.

Sgt. Amar Gandhi, of the Sheriff’s Office has confirmed that the armed suspect, who reportedly discharged multiple rounds from an apartment, remains confined within a unit and continues to pose a threat. The exchange of gunfire occurred on the 8800 block of Winding Way, close to Hazel Avenue, further heightening tensions in the area.

Deputies, in their efforts to ensure public safety, have evacuated each apartment within the complex, where bullets had penetrated apartments. Emergency personnel from the Sacramento Metropolitan Fire District  are on scene to offer support and assistance as the active situation continues.

Motorists have been advised to avoid the area, with several roadways and a section of the Hazel Ridge Plaza Shopping Center cordoned off to facilitate law enforcement operations. 

Law enforcement from multiple agencies are actively working the scene including specialized SWAT units and  the agency’s Rook vehicle.A command post has been established outside Mikuni’s sushi restaurant, which is near the apartment complex.  This remains an active situation as of 12:00 p.m.
