Falcon’s Eye Theatre at Folsom Lake College is bringing a sharp-witted, fast-paced production to the stage with American Night: The Ballad of Juan José. The critically acclaimed play, written by Richard Montoya, opens April 4 and runs through April 19 at the Harris Center for the Arts.
A wildly satirical take on U.S. history and the American Dream, American Night follows Juan José, an immigrant on the verge of his naturalization exam. Exhausted from studying, he drifts into a surreal dreamscape where he encounters pivotal figures and moments in American history. His journey spans centuries, placing him in the middle of landmark events while forcing him to reckon with the contradictions of the nation’s past and present.
Falcon’s Eye Theatre, known for its compelling and thought-provoking productions, brings Montoya’s script to life with a mix of humor, absurdity, and sharp social commentary. The play blends historical fiction with modern-day issues, delivering a narrative that is both hilarious and poignant. Critics have praised American Night for its unique storytelling and biting satire. The Los Angeles Times called it “fast-paced, gleeful, and sly,” while Talkin’ Broadway described it as a “clever, blazing, outrageous satire.”
Performances take place Fridays and Saturdays at 7:30 p.m., with Sunday matinees at 2 p.m. Tickets are available through the Harris Center Box Office online or by phone at (916) 608-6888.The Harris Center is located at 10 College Parkway in Folsom.
