The Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office released additional details today about the recent copper theft case that occurred along multiple locations of the Sacramento Regional Transit light rail tracks, resulting in damage to critical rail infrastructure and the arrest of a 32-year-old man.
According to the sheriff’s office, the incident occurred on Dec. 24, 2025, when deputies assigned to Sacramento Regional Transit contacted Addison Jones after finding him cutting copper wire along the light rail tracks between the Sunrise and Hazel stations. Deputies said Jones was discovered with wire cutters and copper wire that had been removed from poles supporting the overhead catenary system, which supplies power to light rail trains.
Investigators said multiple poles along the route had been damaged as a result of the wire removal. Deputies recovered approximately two pounds of stolen copper wire at the scene, along with additional burglary tools later found inside Jones’ hotel room.
Jones was arrested and booked into the Sacramento County Main Jail on multiple felony and misdemeanor charges, including copper theft, damaging railroad property, vandalism, possession of burglary tools and trespassing on Regional Transit property.
Authorities said Jones remains in custody on $35,000 bail and is scheduled to appear in court on Jan. 12.

The sheriff’s office also released Jones’ booking photo, stating that investigators believe he may be connected to other unreported crimes. Anyone with information that may link Jones to similar incidents is encouraged to contact law enforcement.
