William F. Price’s generous donation to Bradshaw Animal Shelter will fund vital veterinary services and mobile clinics

A single act of kindness can change thousands of lives, and for one Sacramento County veteran, that act will leave an enduring impact on shelter animals for years to come.

Bradshaw Animal Shelter has announced a remarkable donation from the estate of William F. Price, a retired Sacramento County Child Welfare Services worker, Army veteran, and lifelong animal advocate. On July 22, the Sacramento County Board of Supervisors formally accepted Price’s posthumous gift totaling $187,991.08—a contribution the shelter describes as “a final gift to animals in need.”

“This heartfelt donation reflects Mr. Price’s lifelong compassion and his belief in supporting the wellbeing of shelter pets, especially cats with special medical needs,” the shelter said in a statement.

The funds from Price’s estate will directly support two significant initiatives at Bradshaw Animal Shelter. First, the shelter’s on-site veterinary hospital will receive a new dental table, enabling staff to deliver improved oral and dental care to animals—an often-overlooked but critical component of animal health. Second, the donation will help expand Bradshaw’s Mobile Animal Spay/Neuter Hospital (MASH) Clinics. These mobile units travel to underserved areas of Sacramento County to provide free or low-cost sterilization services, supporting pet owners who might otherwise struggle to afford care.

While William Price may not have been widely known during his life, his story speaks volumes. His journey with animals began with a single rescue—a small, medically fragile cat he lovingly named Sweetie. Though their time together was brief, Sweetie left a profound mark on Price. From that day on, he opened his home to other shelter cats with medical needs, becoming a quiet but steadfast champion for their care.

“Thanks to his generosity, the funds will be used to enhance veterinary care at Bradshaw Animal Shelter and expand access to vital services in the community,” the shelter said.

Beyond the equipment and clinics, Price’s donation represents something far greater: the power of one person to make a lasting difference. By directing his final gift toward the care of animals, he ensured that countless shelter pets—many with medical challenges like Sweetie—will now have a better chance at healing, adoption, and a loving future.

“We are deeply grateful for Mr. Price’s legacy. His compassion will continue to make a difference in the lives of animals for years to come,” Bradshaw Animal Shelter said.

Bradshaw Animal Shelter, operated by Sacramento County Animal Care Services, is one of the largest municipal shelters in Northern California, caring for more than 14,000 animals each year—from lost and abandoned pets to those rescued from neglect or needing protection. The shelter accepts every animal regardless of condition or temperament and only considers euthanasia when absolutely necessary for health or safety reasons, after all options have been explored.

The shelter’s services include a full on-site veterinary clinic offering spay/neuter procedures, dental care, vaccinations, microchipping, and medical treatment. It also operates the Community Spay & Neuter Clinic (CSN) and the Bradshaw Animal Assistance Team (B.A.A.T.) Mobile Outreach Trailer, which brings low-cost or free pet care to underserved neighborhoods. Programs for adoption, lost and found services, licensing, pet owner support, and a dedicated Community Cat Program are all part of Bradshaw’s mission. Unique initiatives like the Barks & Recreation Program allow dogs to enjoy outings with volunteers and relieve kennel stress.

With a dedicated team of staff, foster caregivers, rescue partners, and community volunteers, Bradshaw continues to increase its live release rates while improving animal welfare throughout the region. Their mission is rooted in education, responsibility, and compassion—helping both animals and the people who love them.
