Week eight of high school football brought a mix of triumph and disappointment for local teams Friday night. Folsom stayed perfect in Sierra Foothill League play with a commanding road win at Del Oro, while Granite Bay and Casa Roble also impressed under the lights. For others, the night proved more difficult—Oak Ridge fell late to Jesuit, Vista del Lago came up short at Woodcreek, and Cordova was dealt a tough homecoming defeat.
In Loomis, the Folsom Bulldogs shook off an early deficit Friday night and delivered a complete performance on both sides of the ball, defeating Del Oro 35-20 in Sierra Foothill League action to improve to 5-1 on the season.
With a standing-room-only crowd under the lights in Loomis, Del Oro struck first when running back Ty Sauve powered in from one yard out to give the Golden Eagles a 7-0 lead. Folsom responded in the second quarter behind junior quarterback Ryder Lyons, who found Rob Larson on a 27-yard touchdown pass to even the score.
Moments later, the Bulldog defense made its presence felt when Lua Deberry broke through for a sack, setting up August Dupree’s interception that flipped the field and set up another scoring strike — Lyons to Larson again, this time from two yards out — giving Folsom its first lead at 14-7.
After another defensive stand, Lyons connected with Isaiah Williams on a 43-yard touchdown pass, extending Folsom’s advantage to 21-7. Del Oro managed a short rushing score before halftime to trim the lead to 21-14, but Folsom’s defense continued to swarm as Daniel Eagleton grabbed an interception near midfield to halt another potential Del Oro drive.
The Bulldogs opened the second half with strong defense once again, forcing a punt and moving the ball behind a long run from Bronson Bambino. Lyons capped that drive with his fourth touchdown pass of the night — a five-yard strike to Jameson Powell that pushed the lead to 28-14.
Del Oro found the end zone again early in the fourth quarter as Nolen Sauve scored on a two-yard keeper to narrow the gap to 28-20. But the Bulldogs wasted no time answering back. On the ensuing kickoff, Brooks Dupree returned it 52 yards for a touchdown, igniting the visiting sideline and extending the lead to 35-20.
Folsom’s defense took it from there, forcing multiple turnovers on downs — including one at the Del Oro 38-yard line in the closing minutes — to secure the win. Deberry led the defensive charge with key sacks, while Dupree, Eagleton, and Dupree’s brother August each delivered crucial takeaways to keep the Golden Eagles in check.
Oak Ridge falls to Jesuit 24-14
The Oak Ridge Trojans fought to the final minutes Friday night but couldn’t overcome a late turnover on the road as Jesuit secured a 24–14 win in a pivotal Sierra Foothill League matchup.
What began as a tight defensive contest turned into a night of costly miscues for the Trojans, who entered the game 4–2 and looking to continue their strong start to league play. Oak Ridge took an early lead and showed flashes of dominance on both sides of the ball but couldn’t hold off a disciplined Jesuit team that capitalized on opportunities when they mattered most.
Jesuit struck first in the second quarter when running back John Giovannettone broke free for a 22-yard touchdown run, followed by a successful PAT from kicker Yudiel Mondragon. Oak Ridge answered quickly with a strong drive capped by a 1-yard score from quarterback Jasen Womack and a point-after by Kyle Boeker to even the game.
The Marauders took advantage of a short field moments later after recovering a Trojan fumble deep in Oak Ridge territory. Mondragon added a 20-yard field goal before halftime to give Jesuit a 10–7 lead heading into the locker room.
The third quarter opened with Jesuit grinding out yards on the ground, with running back Kwanna Smith powering through for a 5-yard rushing touchdown to extend the lead to 17–7. Oak Ridge’s defense responded, forcing a crucial turnover on downs late in the third and setting up an offensive spark.
With just over eight minutes left in the fourth, Womack found the end zone again, diving in from a yard out to bring Oak Ridge within three. The Trojans’ sideline came alive as momentum appeared to swing their way. But in the game’s decisive moment, Jesuit’s defense delivered the knockout blow—linebacker Luke De Lyser scooped up a fumble and raced 81 yards for a touchdown, sealing the 24–14 victory.
Mondragon’s extra point finalized the scoring, and Jesuit’s defense held firm as Oak Ridge’s late drives stalled. Despite the defeat, the Trojans’ effort never waned, showing resilience and grit throughout the night.
Oak Ridge, now 4–3 overall and 1–1 in league play, will look to regroup as they continue their push toward postseason contention. Jesuit improved to 5–2, positioning itself as one of the top contenders in the SFL race.
Vista, Cordova both suffer tough road losses
In Rancho Cordova, the Cordova Lancers celebrated homecoming with a packed stadium Friday night as they faced Antelope. Unfortunately, Antelope rained on Cordova’s homecoming parade pretty hard, powering up a balance of offense and defense resulting in a 42-8 victory.
Vista del Lago gave undefeated Woodcreek all it could handle early Friday night, but the Timberwolves’ relentless ground game took over after halftime as they powered to a 45–14 win at Woodcreek High School.
The Eagles opened strong, matching the host team’s pace in the first half. After Woodcreek struck first, Vista answered with a rushing touchdown midway through the second quarter to tie the game 14–14. But just minutes later, Timberwolves running back Josiah Melendez broke loose for a 75-yard touchdown run that swung momentum back to the home sideline and gave Woodcreek a 21–14 lead at halftime.
The second half was all Woodcreek. The Timberwolves extended their lead early in the third quarter with another rushing touchdown and a field goal to close the quarter up 31–14. Vista del Lago’s defense was tested as Woodcreek’s deep backfield continued to roll, adding two more rushing scores in the fourth to seal the victory and improve to 6–0 on the season.
Despite the loss, Vista del Lago showed resilience in the first half with strong offensive execution and a balanced attack before the Timberwolves’ size and speed up front began to take its toll.
With the setback, Vista del Lago falls to 2–5 as it continues league play next week. Woodcreek remains undefeated and will look to continue its dominant run through the Capital Valley Conference.
Casa Roble crushes Natomas 57–6
The Casa Roble Rams of Orangevale wasted no time putting on a show for their home crowd Friday night, overwhelming Natomas from the opening kickoff in a 57–6 rout that showcased dominance on both sides of the ball.
Casa Roble’s defense set the tone early, scoring twice before the offense even took the field. Eric Eaton opened the game with a 40-yard interception return for a touchdown, followed by a two-point conversion from Jaylan Barcenas to make it 8–0. Minutes later, Felix Rodriguez added a second pick-six, taking an interception 60 yards to the house to extend the lead to 15–0.
The Rams’ special teams joined the scoring spree when Urijah Fear blocked a Natomas punt and returned it 20 yards for yet another first-quarter touchdown. Quarterback Aidan Lopez then connected with Rodriguez on a 60-yard strike, capping a remarkable 29-point opening quarter that left the visiting Nighthawks stunned.
Casa Roble continued the onslaught in the second quarter with Barcenas punching in an 8-yard touchdown run and Eaton returning another interception 80 yards for his second defensive score of the night. By halftime, the Rams led 43–0, leaving little doubt about the outcome.
Lopez stayed sharp after the break, finding Kymani Burkes for a 50-yard touchdown and Jordan Keller for a 70-yard bomb before the end of the third quarter. Kicker Raul Menera went a perfect 7-for-7 on extra points, helping Casa Roble reach 57 points by the start of the fourth.
Natomas finally broke the shutout in the final minute with a short touchdown run by Fabian Barron, but it was far too late to slow the Rams’ momentum. With the win, Casa Roble improves to 6-1 overall on the season and continues to build steam in league play at 3-0. The Rams will look to carry their explosive form into next week’s matchup, while Natomas (3–4) returns home hoping to regroup after one of its toughest outings of the year.
Granite Bay rolls past Whitney 42-7
The Granite Bay Grizzlies continued their strong season Friday night, overpowering Whitney 42-7 in a Sierra Foothill League matchup that was decided well before halftime.
Granite Bay came out firing, jumping to a 14-0 lead in the opening quarter before unleashing a 21-point second quarter that silenced the home crowd. Behind a relentless ground attack and opportunistic defense, the Grizzlies built a commanding 35-0 lead by intermission and never looked back.
The momentum started early when the Grizzlies marched downfield on their opening possession, finding the end zone twice in the first quarter. Early in the second, they added another rushing score to make it 21-0. Moments later, defensive standout Julio Ene-Basquez stepped in front of a Whitney pass and returned it 40 yards for a touchdown, pushing the lead to 28-0. Running back Dylan Tetz then broke free for a 72-yard rushing touchdown, one of the game’s highlights, to make it 35-0 with seven minutes left in the first half.
The Granite Bay defense repeatedly stifled Whitney’s attempts to move the ball, forcing multiple punts before halftime. The Wildcats finally found the scoreboard late in the third quarter on a 12-yard touchdown run by Cash Stevens, followed by a PAT from Gavyn Dulaney to make it 35-7.
Any hopes of a comeback were dashed early in the fourth quarter when Tetz took the ensuing kickoff 80 yards to the end zone for his second touchdown of the night, sealing the 42-7 victory. Kicker Jimmy Deslaurier was perfect on extra points, going 6-for-6 on the evening.
