Curt Michael Taras, the Folsom man federally indicted on multiple firearms charges tied to an incident near Folsom High School, was released from the Sacramento County Jail on Tuesday and transferred to an out-of-state treatment program under house arrest, according to Sacramento County Jail records.

In response to the latest development, the Folsom Cordova Unified School District released a statement to families addressing community concerns and outlining its ongoing coordination with law enforcement.

Taras, 53, was indicted on four federal counts after authorities said he possessed a firearm within 1,000 feet of Folsom High School on Sept. 24, 2025. Officers initially encountered him near the campus with a firearm, prompting a broader investigation by the Folsom Police Department and the FBI. That search led to the discovery of additional firearms and ammunition in his vehicle and at his residence.

Prosecutors said Taras was legally prohibited from possessing firearms or ammunition because of an active Sacramento County restraining order involving an intimate partner. Because of that order, federal law bars him from possessing weapons, elevating the case to a federal offense.

In its message to families Tuesday, FCUSD acknowledged that news of Taras’s release may heighten concerns in the community. “We recognize that community concerns continue, and we want to assure families and staff that the Folsom Police Department is actively engaged with particular attention to our schools,” the district stated.

The district also emphasized its continued partnership with law enforcement. “Folsom Cordova USD maintains strong partnerships with law enforcement at the local, state, and federal levels. The safety of our students, staff, and families remains our highest priority,” the statement read.

Federal prosecutors previously outlined that Taras faces up to five years in prison and a $250,000 fine for possessing a firearm within a school zone, and up to 15 years and another $250,000 fine for possessing a firearm while under a restraining order. His case remains active in federal court.
