From the Stone Age to the present, blacksmithing has been an innovative trade. Folsom History is delighted to host Master Blacksmith Mark Aspery to speak about the history of blacksmithing as part of their continuing Folsom Revealed series. Aspery will be speaking on Feb. 15 from 5:30 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at the Folsom History Museum.

Mark Aspery is a California Blacksmith Association instructor and author of several blacksmith technique books. Victoria Ritter, Lead Blacksmith at The Square, noted that “Mark is a world renowned Blacksmith that has taken the education of Blacksmithing to a whole new level. If you ask a professional Smith what book they have in their shop, they will say Mark Aspery’s book.”

Mark will examine the evolution of the industry throughout the centuries – what changes have been made, and what has remained the same. He will also bring some of the tools and products of Blacksmithing.

The Folsom History Museum Store will have Mr. Aspery’s pre-signed books (volumes one and two) for purchase, or guests may bring a personal copy for signing. Light refreshments will be provided.

In addition, Mark is conducting a weeklong intensive workshop at Folsom History’s Blacksmithing Forge located at The Square. “We are excited to be growing a thriving Blacksmith program at The Square,” said Executive Director Dr. Rita Hoffstadt, “bringing in nationally known instructors will ensure our Smiths learn from the best, and will establish us as a hub of learning instruction in Northern California.”

The talk concludes with time for Q&A and discussion.
