Set in1931 French colonial Laos, the novel explores a lesser-known period in history through the lens of a young protagonist. Russell will share insights into her extensive research, which took her across Laos, France, and California, utilizing resources in both English and French. Attendees will learn about her connection to Laos, the inspiration behind her novel, and the process of weaving historical facts into fiction.

From Journalism to Mystery: Jennifer K. Morita
OnSaturday, March 1, at 2 p.m., the library welcomesJennifer K. Morita, a former newspaper journalist turned mystery author. Morita will discuss her journey from reporting the news to craftingher debut novel,Ghosts of Waikīkī.
The novel followsMaya Wong, a struggling journalist who returns to her nativeHawaiʻito ghostwrite the biography of a controversial land developer. When her subject is found dead under suspicious circumstances, Maya finds herself tangled in a dangerous mystery.
