FOLSOM — In a unified message to parents and the community, the Folsom Police Department and Folsom Cordova Unified School District issued a joint statement Tuesday emphasizing that the safety of students, staff, and families remains their top priority.
“The safety of students, staff, and families is our top priority,” the statement read. “We are working together as partners to ensure Folsom schools remain safe and secure.”
The agencies outlined continued coordination following the recent arrest of 53-year-old Curt Taras, who was taken into custody on October 13 after being seen walking on the campus of Sandra J. Gallardo Elementary School. Police later located Taras at his home and arrested him for violating a restraining order unrelated to the school.
According to the statement, Taras had previously been arrested on September 24 near Folsom High School after making threatening statements. He was located off campus and arrested by Folsom Police at that time.
“We have been working closely together to address this situation and safeguard our school community,” the joint statement said, adding that law enforcement and school officials are also collaborating with the Sacramento County District Attorney’s Office to ensure all necessary steps are taken to maintain campus safety

The agencies acknowledged that social media chatter and misinformation have contributed to community anxiety, especially among parents and students. “We understand information has been circulating, particularly online, and this has caused anxiety with parents and students,” the statement continued.
In response, both departments detailed several proactive measures currently in place, particularly at Sandra J. Gallardo Elementary and Folsom High School, though they stressed that safety at all campuses remains a shared commitment. Additional police officers have been strategically deployed alongside regular School Resource Officers, and the District Safety Team has increased its visibility. Coordination between FCUSD leadership and the Folsom Police Department is ongoing. Surveillance systems, including campus cameras with facial recognition technology, remain active, along with visitor check-in protocols and comprehensive safe school plans. Law enforcement investigative efforts are also continuing to ensure long-term safety.
“Our collaboration extends to you, our community,” the agencies stated. “If you see or hear anything concerning, please report it immediately. Use 911 for emergencies, and you can report issues and concerns about the school through the anonymous ‘We Tip’ system.”
The statement concluded by reaffirming the partnership between local law enforcement and the school district: “Your children’s safety is why we work together every day. We will keep you informed.”
