FOLSOM — The morning commute took on a fun and healthy twist today as Folsom police officers and the department’s volunteer CAPS team joined students and families at Sandra J. Gallardo Elementary and Folsom Hills Elementary to celebrate Bike and Walk to School Day—also known locally as Walk and Roll Day.
The annual event encourages families to leave the car behind and make the trip to school on foot, by bike, or even by scooter. Officers and volunteers lined the routes to greet students and help ensure a safe, cheerful start to their day.
“We loved seeing so many kids walking, biking, and scootering their way to school—safely and with smiles,” the department shared following the event. “A big thank you to everyone who participated.”
Bike and Walk to School Day is part of a larger nationwide effort coordinated by the National Center for Safe Routes to School. The initiative aims to make active trips to school a safe and appealing choice for families while empowering communities to design safer streets for children and all pedestrians.

Since launching the Vision Zero for Youth initiative in 2016, the National Center has linked Walk, Bike, and Roll to School Day events to local commitments promoting safer routes and eliminating serious traffic crashes. The movement encourages cities to engage local leaders, foster youth advocacy, and recognize communities making bold progress toward zero traffic deaths involving children and youth.
Folsom’s participation in the annual event reflects its ongoing support for safe streets, school safety, and healthy lifestyles among students. Police officials hope the momentum continues beyond this week, inspiring more families to walk, bike, and roll to school throughout the year.
