Theft in progress results in forceful apprehension during traffic stop
After a quick thinking store employee and a fast response by officers from the Folsom Police Department, two women were apprehended and arrested on multiple felony theft and firearm charges Friday just moments after striking a Folsom retailer.
According to the Folsom Police Department, at approximately 7:23 p.m. Friday, Folsom Police Officers were alerted by dispatch that an employee of the Ralph Lauren store at the Folsom Premium Outlets has called 911 to report a theft in progress, involving two individuals at the Natoma Station retail center located off Folsom Boulevard. The reporting party was able to furnish officers with a good description of the two suspects, as well as the vehicle they were driving.
During the call, the two suspect ran out of the store with an amount of merchandise, then fled the scene by vehicle. As officers responded to the area, the suspect’s car was spotted on Highway 50. Upon observing the suspect vehicle, officers performed a vehicle stop which is when the situation escalated. While the passenger of the vehicle, identified as Marjorie Suntock Madison, 48, of Sacramento, fully cooperated with officers during the traffic stop,, the driver of the vehicle, identified as Jerniece Marie Menefee, 45, of Sacramento refused to cooperate with officers. After several requests by officers to exit the vehicle, Menefee refused to do so, prompting officers to forcefully remove her from the car.
Once both suspects had been detained, officers performed a search of the vehicle at which time they located the stolen merchandise from the Folsom Ralph Lauren store as well as a firearm that was previously hidden in a bag sitting on the drivers lap when officers initially stopped the car and approached the driver. Following the search, investigators determined that the firearm was stolen out of Sacramento.
Madison was booked into Sacramento County Jail on retail theft charges as well as an outstanding warrant. She has since been released from custody. Menefee was booked on a total of eight felony charges, including organized retail theft and firearm position according to the Sacramento County Jail where she remained in custody Sunday with bail set at $50,000. Menefee faces additional charges for resisting arrest, according to jail records. She is scheduled to appear in a Sacramento County Court on Tuesday, June 4.
