Folsom police recovered a stolen USPS key and other mail theft evidence earlier this week following a vehicle pursuit that ended with the suspects fleeing on foot.
The incident began when police responded to a call about a possible auto burglary in progress in the 300 block of Montrose Drive in the late evening hours. The caller reported seeing a gray sedan involved in suspicious activity.
Officers located the vehicle, but the driver fled, prompting a brief pursuit. The suspects abandoned the sedan in a nearby neighborhood and eluded capture despite a perimeter being established, according to Folsom Polixe
Upon further investigation, authorities determined that several auto burglaries had taken place in the area. A search of the abandoned vehicle uncovered stolen property linked to those burglaries, including several homemade cluster mailbox keys and USPS locking mechanisms.
Police cite they believe the suspects used the stolen USPS locks to test and assist in manufacturing the keys. Also found in the vehicle were items and tools used in the creation of these unauthorized keys.
The incident highlights the ongoing issue of mail theft, particularly during the holiday season. Police are urging residents to monitor their mailboxes regularly to prevent theft.
Detectives are continuing to sort through the recovered stolen property and will contact victims individually as they are identified. Additional information regarding the suspect is being withheld during what is still an active investigation.
