Police say no firearm was found after patrons evacuated theater
FOLSOM — A report of gunshots inside a Folsom movie theater prompted a police response early Sunday evening, but officers later determined no shooting had occurred and no firearm was involved.
According to the Folsom Police Department, officers were dispatched at approximately 6:45 p.m. after receiving multiple 9-1-1 calls reporting people running out of the Cinemark theater on Iron Point Road near Folsom Boulevard. One caller told dispatchers they believed a gunshot had been fired inside the theater.
According to emergency radio traffic at the time of the incident incident, the 911 call came from a patron of the theater. After the initial call, dispatchers noted that the reporting party was not answering questions on the line and was “extremely out of breath.”
Officers arrived to find the theater had already been evacuated. Police secured the building and conducted an investigation, during which they determined that no shots were fired and no firearm was observed at any time.
Investigators learned that an argument had broken out between two patrons inside the theater. During the dispute, one caller mistakenly believed they heard a gunshot. Other patrons, seeing the altercation and uncertain about what was happening, exited the theater out of caution.
All individuals involved were contacted by officers, and police confirmed there is no ongoing threat to the public. The theater was reopened for business later in the evening.
Police emphasized that reports of gunfire are taken seriously and that the rapid response was out of an abundance of caution to ensure public safety.
