FOLSOM — The Folsom Police Department will soon add two new BMW police motorcycles to its fleet following City Council approval Tuesday night, a move funded almost entirely through a state Cannabis Tax Fund Grant intended to strengthen impaired-driving enforcement and road safety initiatives.

The council authorized the City Manager to execute an agreement with Long Beach BMW for the $84,199.32 purchase. The acquisition includes $84,000 covered by the California Highway Patrol Cannabis Tax Fund Grant and an additional $199.32 coming from the city’s Police Capital Vehicle Fund. According to the staff report presented to the council, contracts of this size require approval under Section 2.36.080 of the Folsom Municipal Code.

In presenting the details, Police Chief Adam Green wrote that the department’s acceptance of the state grant earlier this year positioned Folsom to acquire the new motorcycles as part of a broader strategy to enhance DUI enforcement, training, and impaired-driving response. “The police department agreed to purchase two BMW police motorcycles under the terms of the grant,” Green stated in the staff report. motorcycles

The motorcycles are funded through a California Highway Patrol Cannabis Tax Fund Grant totaling $248,391.30. The council previously approved acceptance of that grant on August 26 under Resolution No. 11440. In that earlier action, the city authorized the funding to “reduce and mitigate the impacts of impaired driving,” including purchasing police vehicles and providing enforcement training.

Green noted the significance of the resource, writing, “This grant award increased revenue estimates and appropriations by $248,391.30 in the General Grants Fund (Fund 012). Costs are funded initially through the General Grants Fund and reimbursed by the State of California, Department of California Highway Patrol.” motorcycles

The department emphasized that the purchase cost is fully supported by budgeted and available funds: $84,000 from the General Grants Fund and $199.32 from the Police Capital Vehicle Fund. The total approved amount—$84,199.32—covers the two motorcycles and allows the department to move forward with procurement through Long Beach BMW.

With council approval secured, the purchase advances immediately, following what Green described as a straightforward execution of grant obligations. The new motorcycles will support officers assigned to traffic safety and impaired-driving enforcement throughout Folsom, expanding a unit relied upon for accident response, DUI patrols, and traffic education efforts.
