FOLSOM – The Folsom Police Department is urging residents, particularly senior citizens, to be on high alert as scammers continue to impersonate trusted companies, government agencies, and even family members in an effort to steal money or personal information.

According to police, these criminals often use partial personal details they have already obtained to build trust and coax victims into confirming more sensitive information. They may also create a sense of urgency or fear to pressure someone into acting quickly without verifying the request.

Police recommend several steps to avoid falling victim. Residents should never share personal information over the phone, by text, or through email unless they are absolutely certain of the caller’s identity. Letting unknown calls go to voicemail can provide time to verify the source before responding. If a message seems legitimate, officials advise calling the company’s official number listed on a bill or its website, rather than using the one provided in the message.

Authorities also warn against clicking on suspicious links in texts, emails, or voicemails, even if they appear to come from a bank or government agency. Instead, log in directly to the account or contact the agency using a trusted phone number. Police stress the importance of discussing any questionable messages or calls with a trusted friend or family member before taking action.
