Folsom Police are alerting the community to a recent wave of scam calls targeting senior citizens, in which fraudsters pose as law enforcement officers in an attempt to extort money.
According to Folsom PD, residents—particularly seniors—have reported receiving calls from individuals claiming to be from a police agency. These callers often say the person on the line has missed jury duty, has an active arrest warrant, owes fines, or must pay bail. Victims are then told to make immediate payments using unconventional methods such as gift cards, wire transfers, or cryptocurrency.
“These are scams,” Folsom PD emphasized in their public warning. “Legitimate law enforcement will never call to demand money or payment by gift cards, nor will we notify you in advance of an arrest.”
Officials urge anyone receiving such a call to hang up immediately, refrain from sharing any personal or financial information, and report the incident. Residents seeking reassurance can contact the Folsom Police Department’s non-emergency line at 916-355-7231 to verify whether any claims are legitimate.
The department is asking the public to help spread the message, particularly to elderly friends and family members who may be more susceptible to these deceptive tactics.
Community members are encouraged to stay vigilant and report suspicious activity to help prevent further fraud attempts.
