FOLSOM—This week marks a major transportation milestone in Folsom, as the Sacramento Regional Transit District (SacRT) celebrates 20 years since light rail first rolled into the city. On October 15, 2005, the Gold Line extension from Sunrise Station officially opened, connecting Folsom residents to Sacramento and beyond through a fast, affordable, and reliable transit link that has since become a cornerstone of regional mobility.

Over the past two decades, SacRT’s light rail system has played a key role in shaping Folsom’s growth, linking residents to jobs, schools, shopping centers, and recreational destinations throughout the capital region. Whether for a weekday commute or a weekend outing, the line has become an integral part of daily life for thousands of riders.

“For 20 years, light rail has been a bridge connecting riders between Folsom and the Sacramento region,” said SacRT General Manager and CEO Henry Li. “We’re grateful for the continued support of our riders and excited about continued improvements ahead.”

Folsom Mayor Sarah Aquino echoed that sentiment, noting how the service has supported the city’s expansion and accessibility. “Light rail has been an important part of Folsom’s growth and vitality,” she said. “We look forward to building on this partnership as SacRT continues to invest in our community.”

To thank local riders for two decades of support, SacRT will host a Rider Appreciation Pop-Up event on Wednesday, October 15, from 7 to 9 a.m. at Iron Point Station in Folsom. Attendees can meet the SacRT team and pick up a commemorative 20-year sticker marking the milestone anniversary.

As SacRT celebrates this historic achievement, the agency continues to look ahead with new service enhancements and technology upgrades designed to make light rail even more efficient and accessible in the years to come.
